Julian Humphreys

Executive & Leadership Coach

Julian is an executive coach and leadership development expert working with smart, conscious, capable leaders on leadership effectiveness, strategic thinking, and sustainable productivity. He is passionate about helping leaders harness the creative power of their hopes and dreams while limiting the destructive impact of their fears and delusions.

Julian has been coaching since 2013, and became a Master Certified Coach (MCC) with the International Coaching Federation in 2023. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Philosophy from Leeds University, an MA from McGill University and a PhD from the University of Toronto. He is the founder of the international journal Philosophy of Coaching, and has taught at universities in both the United States and Canada. He is currently on the coaching faculty at INSEAD.

Before becoming a full-time coach, Julian was on the leadership team of the Systems Development division of CGI, Canada’s largest independent IT consulting company, specializing in business integration and culture transformation.

Julian uses 360 interviews and assessments to gain insights into a leader’s natural strengths and opportunities for development, which then serve as the ground for an outcome-oriented coaching engagement. He is particularly good at asking leaders questions they wish he wouldn’t! He believes teams and organizations benefit when their leaders are courageous, open and vulnerable, at least with themselves.

Julian has coached leaders in a wide variety of industries, including technology, legal, banking, energy, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, logistics, and professional services. He has been a trusted advisor to senior executives at Expeditors, Microsoft, Bayer, Ferrero, PwC, BMO Mellon, and American Greetings. He has also coached leaders in the public sector, including the Pentagon, the Conservative Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada, and the Ontario Public Service, as well as many startup entrepreneurs, family enterprises and creative artists.

He was trained by the Coaches Training Institute (CTI) and the Center for Right Relationship (CRR Global), and is certified in the Leadership Circle Profile 360 and Culture Survey Assessments. He is currently being trained by the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis (TICP) in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Julian travelled extensively in Asia, Europe and the Americas, and lived in London, New York, and Montreal, before settling in Toronto in 2005.
